Think about this way:  You are trying to attract the average Internet user to your site, in the hopes that they will then like what they see and either purchase goods or services from you or one of your affiliates, or at least click on your ads and you can make a few cents.  Unless you have a very technical or specific niche, then you have to keep in mind the profile of the average Internet user.  Internet marketing optimization means that you take into consideration who your visitors will be and how they will find your site.  What they encounter when they arrive at your site is a critical variable that helps decide whether or not they stay.

What does this mean for you?  Well, nearly everyone uses the Internet today in some capacity.  Your Internet marketing campaign should try to target your audience carefully.  This is a huge business—people are using the Internet not only for their entertainment and communication, but also to find goods and services.  Fewer people are interested in commuting to shop, since it’s so easy online.

search enginesBack in 1997, the Internet was in it’s infant stage, and there were approximately 300 million web pages available.  By 2002 that number grew to around 8 billion pages available.  In 2005 you had your choice of over 19 billion indexed web documents and today, you have access to over 50 billion.

As you can see, the Internet is just gathering steam, and we’re still in the beginning stages.  With so many web pages and sites available, how do you find anything?  Well, way back in 1994 people were realizing that same deficiency.  With the number of pages on the web skyrocketing, how do you organize it all?  Well, 1994 marked the development of Yahoo and Web Crawler.  Web Crawler was unique because it was the first time that the content of a page was indexed rather than just the title and meta tags.

1995 saw the introduction of Infoseek and Alta Vista which was ahead of every other search engine because you could type in real life natural phrases for search.  So common nowadays, this was a revelation back then.

1996 saw the introduction of Google, formed by two Stanford students who were merely organizing basketball scores together on the Internet.  MSN arrived in 1998 along with Open Directory, the largest “human” directory at the time.

As you can tell, some of these search engines still exist and some don’t.  Google went on to become the largest by far, and now is responsible for 72% of all the search activity on the Internet.  Imagine a 72% market share in your particular niche?  Will there power at the top continue or will something else replace this mighty giant?  Remember the people that said MySpace would be around forever?  Well, Google happens to be smart, while they might not be on top forever, I predict a very long ride looking down on everybody else for them.

It never hurts to make a few extra bucks, right?  Everybody could use a little extra cash.  What if you could actually , without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home?  You would probably agree that it sure beats getting a second job at the corner convenience store.  You can stay in your pajamas and take all the coffee breaks that you want, once you learn how to make money online.

Today’s economy has forced many people to really take a hard look at their bottom line, and try to find new and creative ways to improve their standard of living.  Learning how to make money online is a way that helps many busy people—especially about those with jobs, kids, social lives, etc.—add a little bit to the budget.  And, there are also tons of people that make enough money online to really make a big change and turn it into a real career.

Domain ExtensionsWith .com being the universal worldwide internet extension, there’s little doubt that anything ending in .com is much more valuable than any of the other available extensions.  But is it necessary to have a .com extension to rank highly in the search engines?

Not anymore it doesn’t, I’ve seen some very high ranking sites using the .net extension, in fact, I own one myself that ranks highly.  By having a look at the search results for many popular terms or kewyord phrases, you’ll likely see the top ten listings mostly use the .com extension.  There is a reason for this.  Back in the mid to late ’90s when the Internet was just starting to take off, the only extension avaiable at that time was .com and since Google does weigh the age and maturity of a domain when deciding search engine listings, you’re more likely to see some aged websites which all naturally use this extension.

As far as SEO is considered, having a .info extension isn’t going to keep you off the front page of Google, what matters most is the link popularity you pointing towards your domain and your site.  So if that great domain name is taken with the .com extension, and most are, don’t hesitate to keep the same domain with a different extension.  It’s not the extension that determines whether the site will rank high, but rather the content of the site and the links coming back.

So don’t be afraid to register a certain extension because of it’s potential ranking set-backs because there are none.  Go ahead and register and get that site built.  Feel free to browse through this site for everything you need to know to monetize and get traffic to your website.

As a website owner or website administrator, one of the hardest things to achieve is getting relevant and many website visitors.  Getting traffic to your website is more of form of art than it is a formula.  You can rent email lists that are specifically targeted to your niche, however, with the over abundance of spam emails sent everyday, it’s unlikely that you’re message will even get read.

What do you do?  Well, there is always Google adwords.  This is highly targeted and specific to people searching on Google.  Let’s say you had a website about “red toy airplanes” for example.  You can sign up for a Google adwords account.  Create your little eye catching ad, and then choose what search terms your ad will appear.

Logically, you would want your ad to appear for the term “red toy airplane” so you would choose this as your targeted keywords.  Next comes the bidding process.  How bad you want your ad to appear first will determine how much you pay for every click your ad receives.  Let’s say it’s one dollar a click, and you received ten clicks from that ad to your website that day.  At a cost of ten dollars.

Another alternative is to promote your site in other ways to rank naturally for your specific set of keyword phrases.  This is where the jungle will eat you alive if you don’t know what you are doing.  Millions of people will sell you their secrets to ranking high within the search engines.  So many in fact, that you will go into information overload, and debt.

StatCounter Website TrafficIn order to track whether or not your website is attracting more visitors you need to use some sort of visitor tracking, something that will keep track of the number of visitors and where they are coming from.  Enter StatCounter.  I use this utility on every single website I have.  What’s good for me is that I have one statcounter account, and when I log into this page, it gives me an instant summary of all my in real time.  The best thing about statcounter is it’s free and you can choose to run it anonymously. or in other words “in the background”, nothing visible on your site.  Very few free apps let you run something on your site without being visible.

There are other utilities that do a very good job and are also free, such as Google Analytics.  This is also a piece of code installed onto your website that runs anonymously in the background and provides a wealth of information about your visitors, such as what keywords they typed into what search engine to find you, what percentage of visitors come from different search engines.  This kind of information is invaluable when you are marketing or targeting your website to specific keywords.  It allows you to track what’s working and what’s not.

Go ahead and install both stacounter and Google analytics onto your site, especially if your site is brand new.  This will give you a good starting point in order to benchmark your progress.  I have both installed on all of my sites, however, I mostly look at statcounter because it provides a quick real time summary.  With Google, the stats are updated after approximately 24 hours.

Linking structure is very important to not only the user of your site, but also to the search engines. I have found that there is a significant amount of disagreement over what a good internal linking structure actually is.  Here are a few pointers that I have found to be helpful in explaining not only what linking structure is, but how to effectively use it to increase the power of your pages in the search engines.

The Many Types of Linking Structures

As you research linking structure, you will find a wide variety of terms to describe different types of linking structures.  There are flat structures, pyramid structures, silo structures, and more.  The actual type of linking structure is a bit less important than how you use it.  Only the true SEO experts are likely to clearly understand the fine points, for the average person just knowing that there are several different types may be enough for now.

As we review the basic concepts of linking structure, you should be focusing on learning the basic principles of authority flow and attribution, which we will get to soon.

Authority = PageRank

Both “authority” and “PageRank” are terms you will hear a lot; both of these terms refer to the actual “power” of your pages in the search engines.  Every time a new link is pointed to the pages, the power is increased.  Google prefers the term PageRank, others call it Authority.  Basically, it means the same thing to you.

Determining Authority

As soon as any page on the Internet is indexed, it begins to receive a particular amount of authority. Different search engines use different methods of calculating this authority, and there is not any true standard of measurement.  Generally stated, a page with many good links will rank better in any major search engine.  Pages can also pass authority to other sites-here’s how that works:

As an example, let’s use Google’s PageRank system just to illustrate how the concept gets put into practice.  If we take a page with a certain PageRank (let’s say for this illustration it has a PR of 3) and the page has 50 links going to different pages.  Each of those 50 links is going to get a portion of that PR3, and the “authority” will be distributed equally.  It doesn’t matter if the link is external (goes to another site entirely) or internal (goes to another page on that same site).

This is an oversimplified illustration of how Authority/PageRank works, but understanding the underlying concepts will help you get a handle on how to use internal linking structures to your advantage.

It is important to remember that your most critical pages should be linked within your own site.  This is especially true for your “money” pages, the pages that you need to rank most prominently.  When you increase the number of internal links on your pages, and limit the external links, then you “share” your authority with yourself, maintaining and increasing the power of your site in the search engines.

For smaller sites, with 20 or fewer pages, it is important to link every page of the site with every other page on the site.  Larger sites, with around 100 pages, should have category pages that are linked to every page, plus links to other important pages.

Following these simple strategies will actually help you increase your own ranking in the search engines.  It’s really that simple.

Some Words of Warning

Okay, so it’s not entirely simple…..there are a few common mistakes that can really cost you in the search engines.  Be careful to avoid the following bad practices:

1.  If you have any links contained within Javascript, the search engines will not detect these links-basically, they don’t exist at all in the SEO world.

2.  Don’t waste your authority by linking to an “About Us” or “Contact” page.  These pages don’t need authority-put the links back to your important pages so they rank higher.  Use the rel=”nofollow” attribute to avoid giving authority unnecessarily.

3.  Just about every link will pass along authority.  Consider all links carefully-any affiliate links or social bookmarking links can be using up portions of your authority that are better used by your own pages.  Again, this is an example of where the rel=”nofollow” attribute is very useful.

Now that you have a basic understanding of how internal linking structure works, you can start to increase your search engine rankings for your site!  This might require changing how you have been doing things, but it is worth the investment of your time.  Time to get to work!
